Diketones are a group of chemicals used in flavouring, including diacetyl, which is responsible for a creamy, buttery flavour. Other diketones include acetyl propionyl and acetoin, which can potentially contain trace amounts of diacetyl under certain conditions.

The concern around diacetyl stems from a case in the 1990s, where workers in a popcorn factory contracted a condition known as “popcorn lung” (bronchiolitis) due to inhaling powdered diacetyl. Choosing the Right PG & VG Ratio
If you’re new to mixing e-liquids, start with a 50/50 PG/VG ratio or a 70VG/30PG ratio.

PG/VG Ratios Explained:

• 100% PG: Not recommended. It’s harsh on the throat and thin, making it unsuitable for most atomizers.
• 50% PG / 50% VG: Ideal for beginners. Works well with most tanks and offers a balanced throat hit.
• 70% VG / 30% PG: Common for short-fill liquids. Smooth vape with a slight throat hit. Works well in most devices.
• 80% VG / 20% PG: Thicker liquid for sub-ohm and RBA users. Produces bigger clouds with less throat hit.

Which Ratio is Best?
The best ratio depends on your setup and preferences. If you like big clouds and use a sub-ohm e-cig, 80VG/20PG is great. For smaller setups like EVOD-style devices, a 50VG/50PG mix might be better. Ultimately, it’s all about your atomizer, mod, and personal preference.

Store your e-liquid away from children and pets. While the caps on your bottles are child-resistant, many kids can open them quickly, so using a lockable box for extra safety is a good idea.

For short-term storage, keep your e-liquid in a high cupboard, away from heat sources such as radiators or ovens. A lockable box can provide added security if needed. Squeeze the plastic bottles before screwing on the caps to remove excess air and ensure they are tightly closed.

Keeping your e-cigarette in good condition is mostly about changing your coil or replacing your pod. However, if you’re revisiting a mod you haven’t used in a while, rediscovering an old tank full of mystery e-liquid, or just giving your favourite kit some extra love, a deeper clean can make a world of difference.

A proper clean can boost flavour, cloud production, and overall performance. Here’s how to do it:

1. Disassemble your device: Remove the tank, coil, and any other detachable parts. If using a pod system, remove the pod and any components that can be easily separated.

2. Clean the tank and parts: Rinse the tank and any removable components with warm water. You can use a mild, non-abrasive soap if necessary, but avoid anything too harsh that could damage the materials.

3. Dry thoroughly: Let the parts dry completely before reassembling. A paper towel or cloth can help absorb any excess moisture.

4. Clean the coil: Coils should typically be replaced when they begin to wear out, but if you’re cleaning an old coil, gently rinse it under warm water and let it dry completely before use. Note: If the coil is too worn, it’s best to replace it.

5. Wipe down the mod: Gently wipe down the mod’s exterior with a soft cloth to remove any dust or residue.

How To Clean And Maintain Your Vape Mod

We recommend the following steps to keep your mod working well. Remember that the mod is an electrical item, so don’t wash it with water.

• Remove any removable parts, such as batteries, battery doors, the tank and any covers or cases.
• If your mod uses replaceable batteries – inspect the batteries to make sure they are free from scratches or tears in the wrap. Replace damaged batteries immediately.
• Remove any visible debris like lint.
• Give the entire mod a wipe with a dry paper towel. Use a cotton bud to wipe harder to reach areas like inside the connection pin (where the tank screws in) and around the charging port.

While cleaning a mod isn’t too difficult, the best way to keep it clean in the first place is to keep an eye on your tank when you’re refilling to catch any leaks before they reach the mod – especially if you’ve just installed a new coil. It is unfortunately possible for an e-liquid leak to damage the circuitry of a mod, so you’re better safe than sorry.

How To Clean And Maintain Your Vape Tank

Outside of changing your coil when the flavour weakens or when the coil changes colour, it can be useful to give your tank a good deep clean every couple of weeks. We also recommend washing your vape tank if you are switching between two dramatically different vape flavours – there’s nothing quite like filling up with a lovely sweet dessert flavour, only to find that mixed in with that flavour is the ghost of the menthol flavour you were previously enjoying! Some particularly strongly flavoured e-liquids do have a tendency to “stick” to the tank, so if you just can’t shake that weird undertone we do recommend a thorough clean.

• Detach your tank from the rest of the device, then disassemble your tank into as many small parts as you can. For most vape tanks, this will mean: the drip tip or mouthpiece, the top cap, glass tube, bottom cap, coil and any chimney or extension pieces. Dispose of your old coil: unfortunately, if a coil is burned out there’s no way to wash it clean.
• Gently sit all of the components in a heatproof bowl or cup.
• Pour warm, not hot, water over the tank pieces. Water that is too hot can damage the tank, so either wait for boiled water to cool or fill the container half with cold water and then half with hot water.
• Let the pieces sit for five to ten minutes. This should dissolve away any e-liquid residue as well as dust or dirt.
• If there are any stubborn bits of residue on the tank, dab a little bit of standard washing up liquid on the offending mark and lather, then rinse under running water for at least two minutes to make sure all soap is completely gone.
• Drain the pieces, and then dry them thoroughly with a clean paper towel. Make sure to double check that the airflow holes are free of debris.
• Give the pin (the part that screws into the mod) a wipe to ensure there is nothing to interrupt the connection.
• Make sure everything is completely dry before reassembling the parts.

Note: if this is the first time you are disassembling a particular tank, we recommend having the manual to hand so you can easily put all the pieces back together. There’s nothing worse than spending ages trying to figure out where that last tricky piece should go!

How To Clean And Maintain Your Vape Pod Mod

 While the line between pod kits and tank kits is blurring more and more due to the boom in pods with replaceable coils, one thing pod mods still have in common is that generally the chamber that holds the e-liquid sits inside the body of the device.

• Remove the pod from the device. On most pod devices like the Caliburn you simply need to pull the pod up, but on some others like the Geekvape Boost there may be a release button.
• Use a paper towel to soak up any drops of e-liquid that may have leaked onto the pod or the mod.
• Use a cotton bud to gently sweep round the connection pins to make sure they are not clogged with e-liquid or dust. Also clean the airflow points.

• E-liquid on your hands? While washing with warm soapy water is ideal, if you can’t get to a sink we recommend using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It cuts through the stickiness with ease.
• E-liquid spill? Surface cleaners containing vinegar will instantly remove any leftover film. In a pinch, a spoonful of white vinegar mixed with about 200ml of warm water also works well.
• Finding shortfills a pain? If you can never seem to pop those lids off without an e-liquid explosion (it’s happened to us all), we recommend purchasing a bottle cap removal tool.

DON’T’s:

1. Never use damaged batteries: If a battery is damaged, don’t use it. Dispose of it safely.

Proper maintenance of your vape hardware ensures better performance and longevity. Follow these tips to keep your setup in great condition:

Coils:

1. Use the recommended wattage or temperature range: Always use your coil within the manufacturer’s guidelines to avoid burning the wick. Start at a lower wattage and gradually increase until you get the flavour and hit you prefer.
2. Avoid over-powering your coil: Too much power too soon can cause the coil to burn out. Work up to your preferred setting.
3. Don’t rinse coils with tap water: Some vapers rinse their coils, but we don’t recommend this as it can leave residue and bacteria. A new coil will always provide better flavour than a cleaned one.

Tanks:

2. Store your tank upright: Tanks left on their side, especially overnight, can leak. Keep it standing to avoid leaks.

Mods:

1. Keep your mod clean: Wipe away excess e-liquid and other buildup, particularly around the 510 thread. A tissue, paper towel, or cotton bud works well for cleaning.
2. Avoid using water to clean your mod: Water can damage your mod and battery. If necessary, use alcohol (such as vodka) to clean the 510 connection.

Batteries:

1. Store batteries properly: Always store spare batteries in a protective case to prevent them from being scratched, knocked, or dented. Never carry loose batteries in your pocket or handbag.
2. Marry your batteries: If your mod uses multiple batteries, “marry” them by buying the same type and charging them together. Always use these paired batteries together to ensure they share the load evenly.

Dripping is a vaping method where e-liquid is dripped directly onto the exposed coil, rather than using a tank to supply the liquid. The liquid soaks the wick, and when the coil is fired, the liquid vaporizes as usual. You take a few puffs, then drip more liquid onto the wick when needed.

Dripping Atomisers

For dripping, a special type of atomiser called a Rebuildable Dripping Atomiser (RDA) is used. RDAs have a wide mouthpiece leading directly to the atomiser coil, and e-liquid is dripped directly onto the coil through the mouthpiece. The RDA typically has terminal posts for coil connection and a small deck to support the wicks. The deck also forms a well to collect any excess e-liquid.

Many people who drip prefer to build their own coils and wicks, turning dripping into a more hands-on, creative hobby.

Advantages of Dripping

1. Enhanced Flavour: Since the e-liquid is vaporized immediately by direct heat, you experience bolder and more intense flavours compared to tank vaping.

2. Switch Flavours Easily: RDAs only hold a small amount of e-liquid, making it easy to change flavours quickly. If you get tired of one flavour, you can simply drip a new one.

3. Customisation: Dripping is ideal for those who like experimenting with different coils, wicks, and e-liquid flavours. Many enthusiasts view it as an art form, giving a whole new level of creativity to vaping.

Disadvantages of Dripping

1. Time-Consuming: Dripping isn’t ideal if you’re just looking for a quick nicotine hit. It requires more effort compared to regular tank vaping, as you need to drip e-liquid after every few puffs.

2. Frequent Re-dripping: After a few inhales, you’ll need to drip more e-liquid, which can be inconvenient, especially on the go. Spills and leaks are more likely, and you’ll need to carry a bottle of e-liquid at all times.

3. Learning Curve: It takes time to perfect the technique, and mistakes like over-dripping can lead to spills, burnt tastes, or even burnt lips.

How to Drip

1. Take your e-liquid bottle or dropper and add three or four small drops directly onto the coil. Be careful not to flood the coil, as it can cause hot e-liquid to spit into your mouth.

2. After dripping, replace the drip tip or RDA cap, fire up your device, and inhale. You’ll enjoy large clouds and intense flavour.

3. After a few puffs, repeat the process as needed.

How Not to Drip

• Avoid dry hits: If you notice a dry hit, stop vaping immediately and drip more e-liquid. Letting the RDA run dry can result in overheating and a burnt taste.

• Don’t over-drip: Too much e-liquid can flood the coil, causing hot liquid to spit into your mouth, which is uncomfortable.

• Watch your lips: Always ensure your drip tip is in place before inhaling. Failing to do so can lead to burns, as the coil can get very hot.

Squonking is a method of vaping that combines the convenience of a tank with the flavour intensity of a dripping atomiser (RDA). It’s essentially a “hands-free” way to drip, where you can vape like an RDA user without constantly re-dripping e-liquid.

Why Does It Have Such a Silly Name?

The term “squonking” was coined in 2009 by a DIY modder known as Carlos49, who created a mod that allowed e-liquid to be fed directly into an RDA from a squeezable bottle. The prototype was described as “squonking” the juice into the atomiser, leading to the creation of the term.

Do I Need a Squonk Mod?

Yes. A squonk mod is necessary for this method. Inside the mod, there is a squeezable silicone e-liquid bottle and a battery. You squeeze the bottle with your finger, which forces e-liquid through a tube that connects to the RDA via a special hollow 510 connection pin. As you squeeze, the e-liquid is pushed up into the RDA, saturating the cotton and wick. Once you release the pressure, any excess liquid flows back into the bottle, ready for the next squeeze.

Do I Need a Squonk RDA?

Yes. You’ll need an RDA with a bottom feeding pin (BF pin) to connect to your squonk mod. Many newer RDAs come with this pin included, making them squonk-compatible.

Advantages of Squonking

1. Convenience: Squonking eliminates the need for constant dripping, making it much easier when you’re out and about.

2. Less Messy: Unlike dripping, where excess e-liquid can spill down the sides of your mod, squonking ensures that any surplus liquid goes back into the squonk bottle, keeping things tidy.

3. No Need to Carry a Separate Bottle: With a squonk mod, the e-liquid is already built into the mod, so you no longer need to remember to carry a bottle around.

Disadvantages of Squonking

1. Battery Life: Many regulated squonk mods use a single 18650 battery due to space taken up by the e-liquid bottle, which may not offer enough power or battery life for some vapers.

2. Filling and Handling: Removing, filling, and reinserting the squonk bottle can be a bit messy and troublesome, especially if you’re not used to it.
